Copyright and Fair Use

Acceptable Use Guidelines : Electronic Resources

On Campus Access to Computers and Licensed Electronic Products
The Library endeavors to license access to electronic resources for the entire University, including remote access through the proxy server, where at all possible. The Library will make every effort to avoid licensing resources for which access is limited by specific IP subranges or addresses, or that require the use of usernames and passwords. IP based authentication offers all current members of the UTD community practical, on demand, uninterrupted, unmediated, and seamless access to the Library’s electronic collections. Electronic resources are provided as tools for research, teaching, and study. Commercial use, systematic or excessive downloading, redistribution of electronic information to non-subscribers are all expressly prohibited. Both the Library and electronic resource providers closely monitor the University's account activity. Violations can result in suspension or cancellation of access.

Copyright and Licensing Restrictions
The Library undertakes contracts on behalf of the University community with the understanding that all UTD users will respect United States copyright law.

No copyrighted work may be copied, published, disseminated, displayed, performed or played without permission of the copyright holder except in accordance with Fair Use as defined in Title 17 of the US Code and the Library’s licensing agreement with the vendor.

Use of any software designed to automatically browse the web, record web browsing activity, or systematically download content for offline use is expressly forbidden and jeopardizes the entire University community's continued access to all electronic resources.

Off-Campus Access
Off campus access to the Library’s electronic resources is restricted to currently-registered UTPB students, and current staff and faculty. Legally-binding contracts limit the access the Library is able to provide. If you are currently affiliated with UTPB and you are having problems accessing one of the databases, ejournals, or ebooks, please contact the library services desk (432) 552-2370.

UTPB Library's Internet Policy
The Internet, as an information resource, enables the UTPB Library to provide information beyond the confines of its own collections.  It allows access to ideas, information, and commentary from around the world. While the Internet offers a wealth of material that is personally, culturally, and professionally enriching to individuals of all ages, it also enables access to some material that may be offensive, disturbing, inaccurate, or illegal under U.S. law.  The UTPB Library cannot police this global network and takes no responsibility for its content.  Each individual user must take responsibility for his or her activities on the Internet.

The use of the Internet must be consistent with the mission of UTPB Library, the policies of the University, and the laws of the State of Texas.
